Michael Johnson
The NAACP is committed to eliminating the racial and ethnic disparities in our health care system that plague people of color in the United States. African Americans continue to have the highest incidence, prevalence and mortality rates from chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. Additionally issues like HIV and infant mortality have continued to overwhelm the Black community. Systemic imbalances in the health care delivery system disproportionately affect African Americans and Latinas more than their White counterparts.
Despite the magnitude of ill health and disability among the youth, most young people are not aware of the specific health issues that affect youth, and the risk factors associated with their health. This situation calls for intensified efforts to increase awareness about their health issues. It is the responsibility of the Health Committee to work to promote, protect, and maintain the health quality of African Americans and other ethnic minorities. This committee shall work to advocate for equal access to health education, care, treatment, and research for all Americans. This committee shall sponsor health initiatives throughout the university and support health initiatives of the Association.
- This committee will be responsible for hosting creative programs on health issues that specifically affect people of color.
- Collaborating with the Student Health Center to distribute information on what services are offered on campus including STD testing and other screenings.
- To work with other organizations who promote a more healthy environment for all of us.
